Double Canyon Announces New Winemaker

Feb 28, 2017

Double Canyon, a winery dedicated to producing benchmark Washington Cabernet Sauvignon, announced today the addition of Kate Michaud as its winemaker. In her new role, Michaud will direct and oversee all winemaking operations, from vine to bottle.

“We’re delighted to have Kate join the team, especially at such an exciting time for Double Canyon,” said general manager and winegrower Will Beightol. “I look forward to working with her as we continue to build our brand and strive to create best-in-class, distinctive Washington-grown Cabernet Sauvignon.”

Uniquely qualified, Michaud brings nearly 15 years of Washington State winemaking experience to the helm of Double Canyon’s winery operations. Most recently, she was the first Washington-based winemaker funded by Naked Wines, through which she produced multiple 90+-point Cabernet Sauvignons. She previously served as a winemaker and assistant winemaker for Covey Run and Canoe Ridge, respectively.

Michaud’s arrival comes at a pivotal time for Double Canyon, which is currently constructing a new, state-of-the-art winemaking facility in West Richland, Wash., in close proximity to the brand’s namesake Double Canyon Vineyard in the heart of the Horse Heaven Hills appellation. As the facility nears completion, Michaud will offer direction on the 50,000-case capacity production facility, ensuring that all aspects meet the specifications desired to create top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon.

“To have a hand in building a winery and a brand—that’s an enticing opportunity, to say the least,” said Michaud. “I look forward to working with Will and the rest of the team to build on the strong wine program they have created over the past six vintages. I have been following the project from its inception, and I’m excited about what the future holds for Double Canyon.”

Michaud resides in the Tri-Cities area of Washington, close to the future Double Canyon winemaking facility, with her husband, two daughters and dog.
